Random thoughts on Las Vegas:

Here we go again.

When I heard the first reports of the Las Vegas shooting, they were talking about “automatic gun fire” and I thought, here we go again, confusing semiautomatic with fully automatic.  Then I heard the shooting on tv.  That’s fully automatic gun fire.  It sounds like an M-60 machine gun on that video.

That means that someone with pretty good connections is behind all of this. Because automatic weapons are all pretty much illegal in the US.

There are means whereby someone who knows what they are doing can pretty easily modify sporting rifles from a semiautomatic to a fully automatic, something to do with the sear mechanism.  The main problem with screwing with the sear, if you do not know precisely what you’re doing, is that the weapon can become a runaway.  The trigger doesn’t function properly and the weapon will not stop shooting until it runs out of ammo.

Unless the shooter had a modified magazine of some sort, the shooting seemed to go on too long between stoppages for a magazine fed weapon.  Sounds like a belt fed weapon to me.

As a famous idiot once said, what difference at this point does it make?  Well I think it does make a difference.  The type of weapon may indicate a larger conspiracy.  Anyone can get a sporting rifle.  A few in that number have the knowledge to modify it. Obtaining a belt fed machine gun and ammo is a far more difficult prospect and possibly indicates a wider cabal.

I suppose all of this will be run to ground soon enough.

Prediction:  Before the bodies cool to room temperature, the Demo-Dopes will be wailing about “common sense gun control.”  Well if the weapon was a fully automatic, they are all pretty well controlled all ready.

So, the target was a country music festival.  That means the crowd was predominately white.  (I know.  There he goes again, profiling.) So I guess these white supremacists crackers listening to  music without swear words were just getting what they deserved, right?

If there is any good news in this terribly bad situation, it is that the shooter chose to shoot from the 32 floor.  Had the shooter chose to shoot from a lower floor, the casualty count would have been much worse. Plunging fire, shooting down on the target, is the least accurate. Had the shooter been at shoulder level or lower of the crowd and shot across the crowd, every round would have hit one or more victims.

Well let me close this out by saying F-the-NFL.  If any of those BS artists take a knee tonight, the stadium should walk out after the last note of the anthem.

The full auto fire lasted just about 10 seconds, which is about enough time for an automatic 5.56 or 7.62 to burn through a 50 or 60 round magazine. Then the break while reloading, and another 10 seconds of fire. I timed it.

As packed as that concert crowd appeared to be, that fire from on high had a pretty darned good chance of having each round strike a body, if not a direct hit, the ground appeared to be concrete, so the ricochets would have been nasty. The report is that he fired for about 10 minutes. That's a whole lot of projectiles. Surprised there weren't more casualties. And you're right, there's going to be another hue and cry for more restrictive gun control.
