American ingenuity is the key

The local fish wrap is awash with editorials and letters to the editor whining about the high price of gas. All of them seem to be of the “we need to tax the oil companies’ profit” variety. None have offered an opinion on how “taxing their profits” will deliver even a single drop of additional oil to the pump.

One genius even thought it’d be a good idea to “break up” the American oil companies. That makes sense. If three huge oil companies cannot bring the cost of oil down, 20-30 small ones could. That’s why McDonald’s hamburgers are so much more expensive than everyone else’s. McDonald’s is just too big. We need a dozen or so mini-Mac’s.

(Voice in head: “Pssst, Lex! It’s backwards dude. McDonald’s hamburgers are the CHEAPEST!”)

Huh? How can that be? Big hamburger has got to be gouging us. After all, I’ll bet Americans visit the drive thru more often than they do the gas pump. And what with the summer little league baseball practice and early evening games, you know mom’s going to be looking for a convenient way to feed little Johnny. Big hamburger will jacking up the cost of Happy Meals right during the peak drive thru season. It happens every year.

Well if it’s not true for big hamburger, why would it hold true for big oil?

Another local genius proclaims - with all the certainty of Lex jr. stating that in fact his room is clean - that we “cannot drill our way to energy independence.” But just like we know that the first thing we are likely to see when we go to inspect jr.’s room is a pair of dirty skivvies right in the middle of the floor, we know we have the resources and ingenuity here to become self sufficient.

We’re Americans for God’s sake! Let’s start acting like it. Why are we letting ourselves be held hostage by a bunch of Middle East, thugs, tyrants, kings and emirs or worse a bunch of know nothing, do nothing, be nothing green weenies?

Pot, Kettle, Black. Nearly every day our "big government" lambasts another "big" industry. Big oil, big drug, Walmart, big health insurance, etc. So that means let's give the small businesses abreak. But big government tells them to comply with minimum wage, payroll taxes, EPA rules, anti-discrimination hiring practices, and the list goes on. With overall approval ratings with 2 of three branches at all time lows it no wonder. Of course "big media" gets a pass unless it's consevative talk shows then Reid and Pelosi caterwall. The gov should look squarely in the mirror to start their clean up. Then I will listen to them. Otherwise a 13% approval rating is the highest they will go. The Griffin.
