They are all "our boys"

61 years ago today our boys hit the beaches at Normandy, France. That day was marked by hundreds upon hundreds of untold acts of heroism and sacrifice. The press was there to report on the heroism and sacrifice of our boys. The press told the story of our boys at Pointe Du Hoc. That was where our Rangers scaled steep cliffs to take out Nazi guns trained on the landing beaches. The press told an eager nation of the “matchbox fleet” and places given odd names like, Sword, Juno and Omaha Beach. Soon after the invasion had begun the press reported the truth that our boys had begun delivering the light of liberty to a European continent which had laid in darkness for four long years. The press continued to report on our boys’ victorious march across Europe.

Today, our boys are performing with equal heroism and sacrifice. Today our boys are delivering the light of liberty to another continent which has long lived in the darkness of the shadows of political and religious tyrants. Today our boys are fighting and winning an historic struggle as important as the one that took place 61 years ago.

But today there is no “our boys” for the American press. The American press is so mired in an anti-Americanism spawned from some odd confluence of moral superiority, moral relativism, globalism and Bush hatred that our boys can only make the headlines if they shoot a couple of murdering terrorist in the heat of battle or fail to treat captured murderers with the most tender of kid gloves. The American press joins in with Al Jazeera in trumpeting only propaganda that will embarrass and further endanger our boys as they go about doing their already dangerous work.

ABC signs off Nightline reading the names of the dead when they could be reading one of the hundreds of citations awarded to our boys for their valor. Newsweak dwells on an unsubstantiated rumor about Koran desecration while ignoring the hero’s work being done by our boys in Gitmo. The American press cannot bring itself to relate to “our boys” as “their boys” – and for that, they can go to hell.
